THE REALREAL'S LUXURY RESALE HANDBAG SEARCH TRENDS TELL ONE STORY. ITS CONSIGNMENT OFFER TELLS ANOTHER.

Updated: 13 minutes ago

Today luxury reseller The RealReal, in business for 15 years and with more than 50 million

items sold published its 2026 Resale Report, “The (R)evolution of Resale.”

According to the press release, the annual report reveals trends across “what customers search and save” as well as “what they buy, consign and sell,” and how the value of individual items changes over time.

Page 18 particularly caught my attention. Titled “Most Likely to Succeed: The Future Resale Stars,” it highlights six handbags that showed increases in search volume during two periods: April through June 2026 versus January through March 2026, and 2026 versus 2025.

These bags reflect very different styles, from the Ferragamo Hug structured top-handle designs to the Phoebe Philo Gig softer shoulder bags, so the increased search interest is not limited to one particular handbag look.

Of course, an increase in searches does not guarantee that each bag will become a major resale success. Search interest may or may not translate into purchases, sustained demand, or strong resale values. Still, The RealReal presumably has substantial data behind these selections. And once a bag is featured in a widely distributed resale report, the attention itself could encourage more shoppers to seek it out.

That raises an important operational question: will The RealReal have sufficient inventory of these bags if demand increases? In resale, having the inventory is most important. A

marketplace may generate or identify strong shopper interest, but it cannot capitalize on that interest unless the desired items are available on its platform.

A Different Message in a Consignment Email

Coincidentally, I had been considering writing about a detailed email I received from The RealReal two days earlier. The subject line - - “Selling with The RealReal” initially appeared straightforward. It promoted the opportunity to earn up to $400 in extra site credit, along with an August bonus.

But there was an asterisk next to “Credit,” so I immediately went to the details.

What initially seemed like a simple way to earn site credit became considerably more complicated after reading the terms. The fine print explains the requirements, restrictions, timing, qualifying prices, and limits. It also raises questions about how easily consignors can determine in advance whether they will actually qualify.

Below are the promotion details, followed by my comments and perspective on what the terms may mean for consignor.

From August 1, 2026, through August 31, 2026:

Receive a $50 site credit when you consign a handbag with a list price of $750 or more before August 31, 2026.

Comment: The important phrase is “list price of $750+.” The RealReal determines the listing price and controls markdowns. A consignor may believe a bag should be listed at $750 or more, but cannot be certain that The RealReal will price it at that level.

Receive another $50 credit when the handbag with a list price of $750 or more is branded Dior, Bottega Veneta, or Fendi before August 31, 2026.

Comment: This is where the promotion becomes especially interesting in light of the 2026 Resale Report. None of these three brands appears among the six brands listed in “Most Likely to Succeed: The Future Resale Stars.” The report spotlights Ferragamo, The Row, Celine, Chanel, Phoebe Philo, and Saint Laurent. The consignment incentive, meanwhile, prioritizes Dior, Bottega Veneta, and Fendi.

That does not necessarily mean the report and the promotion are contradictory. The RealReal may have strong demand for the three promoted brands, may need more inventory in those categories, or may be responding to different customer segments and inventory needs. Still, the contrast is worth noting. The bags drawing increased search interest are not necessarily the same bags The RealReal is actively incentivizing consignors to send in.

Receive another $300 credit when you consign 20 or more items, each with a list price of $145 or more, before August 31, 2026.

Comment: Again, The RealReal sets the listing prices. A consignor may send 20 items they believe should each list for at least $145, but there is no guarantee that all of them will be priced at that threshold.

Items must be consigned within the promotion window and priced prior to site-credit payout to qualify.

Comment: This requirement is important because the consignor must allow enough time not only for the items to arrive, but also for The RealReal to process and price them before the credit is issued.

Site-credit codes will be delivered by email on September 15, 2026.

Comment: Providing a specific delivery date is helpful. It gives consignors a clear expectation about when they may receive any qualifying credit.

Eligible consignors can earn up to $400 during the promotion period.

Comment: This clearly states the maximum possible credit.

Credits expire five days from the date of issue.

Comment: Five days seems like a very short period in which to use a credit. A recipient could feel pressured to make a purchase quickly, particularly if they want time to browse, compare available items, or wait for something they genuinely want to become available.

Credits are not valid on shipping, prior purchases, or First Look subscriptions.

Non-transferable. Site-credit codes may be split between multiple orders.

Returned items originally purchased using a code will result in the reactivation of the code, which will be valid for the following three days.

Comment: The policy is clearly stated, but a three-day reactivation period is also brief. Because three days is not necessarily an intuitive timeframe for a store-credit policy, it is another reason consignors and shoppers need to read the details carefully.

Promotional site credit has no intrinsic value, is not redeemable for cash, and is nonrefundable.

Search Trends, Inventory Priorities, and Promotion Terms

The RealReal’s 2026 Resale Report offers useful insight into changing shopper interest, particularly for handbags. But the August consignment promotion is a reminder that marketplace demand, inventory strategy, and promotional incentives do not always point in exactly the same direction.

The report may indicate which bags consumers are searching for. The promotion may indicate which inventory The RealReal wants more of. Those can overlap, but they do not have to.

For consignors, the lesson is simple: read beyond the headline offer. “Earn up to $400” sounds appealing, but qualification depends on details that can materially affect the outcome, including The RealReal’s item pricing, the number of qualifying pieces, the applicable brands, processing timing, and the five-day expiration period for the site credit.

That is true not only when working with The RealReal, but with any resale platform.

Research for this post was conducted between August 24 and August 25, 2026, and details may have changed since then. I have consigned with The RealReal, and my transactions were handled satisfactorily. I was not paid to write this post.
